What happened to “Happily Ever After”?

Summer will be here before you know it. Summer and I kinda have a love-hate relationship. It’s one of my least favorite seasons due to the ridiculously unbearable heat down here in Texas! On the other hand, one of the things I love most about summer is the fact that so many people choose this sunny season to get married. I have been to more summer weddings than I can count on both hands. I enjoy attending weddings- probably more than the average person. I like to see all the little details that go into the wedding ceremony and reception. I love it when people customize their weddings to match their personalities. I love to marvel at all the DIY decorations. Of course, my absolute favorite part is witnessing the bride and groom lovingly and happily entering into holy matrimony.

On wedding days, love just fills the air and emotions run high. The bride, the groom as well as family and friends may shed tears of joy during the ceremony. Everyone heads to the reception to help celebrate the newlyweds union. Old love burns anew reminding married couples of their own wedding day. Wedding days always seem to end so perfectly. You leave the venue smiling and thrilled for the happy couple. You can tell that the couple invested a lot of time and energy into preparing for the big day. But wait…. what about the actual marriage?!

wedding

Did you know that nearly half of all marriages in the US end in DIVORCE? Nearly half! That information always makes me really sad because I am a hopeless romantic. I know 6 couples who are getting married this summer. If I were to take these statistics into account, that would lead me to assume that at least 3 of these couples may end up divorcing each other in the future. How crazy is that?!  I sat and pondered why this statistic is so high in America. One of the many reasons that I came up with is that couples do not invest the same amount of time and energy it takes to prepare for marriage as they do preparing for the wedding! People get caught up with the glitz and the glam of a wedding and neglect getting the blueprint for the “happily ever after”.

My husband and I invested in marriage counseling before we actually got married! Some people thought it was a bit unorthodox but we wanted to be certain that we were ready for the commitment we would be making to each other and to God. It was one of the best decisions that I ever made. We have also attended marriage conferences to maintain our relationship. Why wait until your marriage is broken to fix it? Give it routine maintenance along the way so that it can withstand the long journey.

There are a plethora of things that I see in today’s society that lead to some marriages failing. Here are a just a few things that I believe MARRIED COUPLES could change in order to strengthen their relationships.

DISCLAIMER: I have been happily married nearly 6 years but I don’t claim to be an authority on marriage. These are solely my opinions. You may agree or disagree and that is perfectly fine :)

1. Stop including everyone in your marriage! Oh my goodness! One would think that this is common sense but not everyone seems to get this principle. When you get married, you become one, a team, a unit, husband and wife (Mark 10:8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh). The only 3rd party that should be in your relationship is God-not mama, daddy, sister, brother, friends, cousins, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Every relationship has its ups and downs. It’s inevitable! You are 2 different people and sometimes you have differences in opinion. This is a normal fact of life but everyone does not need to know when you have a disagreement with your spouse. And dear Lord, please help people stop airing their dirty laundry on Facebook & Twitter! A marital argument should not be expressed via a status update for literally the whole WORLD to see. Before you post that message, stop to consider how ignorant will you look and embarrassed you will feel when you and your spouse resolve your issues. Not only will you have your family, friends, coworkers, church family, etc looking down on you for staying in what they now consider a tarnished relationship but now you have to go on the defense to try to strengthen your relationship and reputation. Why give people a front row seat to your drama? Think about the other people who could be affected by your post as well ( i.e. children, parents, etc). Once you post something, it lives on the internet forever so now you will have a constant reminder of the day you were angry at your spouse. Do yourself a favor, don’t do it.

2. Stop being spiteful.  This was something that I had to learn early on in my own marriage. If your spouse does something that you don’t like that doesn’t give you the right to do it as well. I’m sure you may have heard the saying “2 wrongs don’t make a right” well this principle needs to be applied to your marriage as well. For example, let’s say your spouse goes out and buys a flat screen TV against your wishes. You are angry that they had such blatant disregard for your feelings about the purchase so you decide to go on a shopping spree spending the exact amount they spent on the TV. This is not justifiable. All your actions did was A) take more money out of your household budget B) further show your lack of respect for each other’s opinion and C) set a bad example for children or other people who may look up to you. Ask yourself: How will this make your marriage stronger? Now you’re mad at her and she’s mad at you…and for what? A TV and some clothes and shoes. It’s not worth it. Instead calmly express to your spouse how their decision made you feel and leave the situation alone. You would be surprised at how the feeling of disappointment has the power to convict people. After all, no one wants someone to be disappointed in them.

3. This will be my last point since this post is getting extremely long… learn to communicate effectively with your spouse! This is probably the most important aspect to having a great relationship. I have found that most of my issues with my amazing husband have occurred when we failed to communicate effectively. Either one of us talks and the other fails to listen OR one of us is so frustrated that we just shut down in the middle of a discussion or worse leaves the situation altogether. This is not an effective way to communicate. You will find during those times you can say things out of anger that you immediately regret or that something is lost in translation because you are so wrapped up in your own emotions that you don’t take into consideration the one you love. No matter what the old adage says, words can hurt. Be careful what you let come out of your mouth. (Remember: Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof -Proverbs 18:21). What you say can strengthen your relationship or bring it to an end. What my husband and I have learned to do is respect each other’s opinions. We sit down when we have a problem and try to talk it out respectfully. When one is talking, the other should be listening. After all, if 2 people are talking or yelling at the same time this equals no one being heard and no problems being resolved. There is no need for yelling and screaming to get a point across. Most of the time we come to realize that we are saying the same thing, just in different ways. Or we come to determine what we need to fix and make a mutual plan of action.

I said all of that because I love marriage and I want to see this disparity change. What I want newlyweds, engaged couples, couples in general to realize is that any relationship takes WORK!  Marriages are no different. You don’t go to bed on your wedding night and awake everyday thereafter to a perfect marriage for the next 50 years. You have to be willing to do the work to maintain the happy in the here and now.

I could go on for days on this subject but I will stop here. For all you married, engaged, dating couples out there, I would love to hear your thoughts. My single friends you can chime in as well.

Tone those thighs!

For many years, I led a quite sedentary lifestyle. I worked 12 hr night shifts running up and down the halls of the hospital so in my mind there was no need to do anything else. I gained weight because I didn’t follow a strict diet and I just sat around the house on my days off watching tv, snacking, and browsing the web. It wasn’t until I was gifted with chubby cheeks and a muffin top that I realized that I needed to move around a tad bit more!

Initially, I hated exercising but I have to admit I am enjoying it more and more these days. Maybe it’s due to the burst of energy I get afterwards or maybe its because I am seeing the results from my workouts…who knows. What I do know is that I tend to gravitate more towards exercises that are disguised in a way that I don’t feel like I’m exercising. I like to do things like walk a few laps around parks, down a few city blocks and around shopping centers.  I like doing yard work and I love to dance…in the privacy of my own home. I am not one for the gym so it was vital to find various ways to get a good workout in. Plus I’m saving money in the process of getting fit..#winning!

Anyway here is a video for one of the many dances I do at home to help me tone the thighs and booty while getting in a lot of cardio! This dance was all the rave in the 90s so I thought for this wellness Wednesday I would take you all back on a journey through nostalgia. All you 80s babies may remember this one. It starts off like this…the butterfly uh uh that old…let me see you…TOOTSIE ROLL!

I promise if you do this dance at least 2 times your heart will be racing and your legs and booty will be burning! Plus its kinda fun to go on a trip down memory lane in the process. I can remember all the times my neighbors and cousins and I used to do this dance in the middle of my driveway as the music played on my very 1st boombox. Ahh the good ole days!

P.S. remember to tighten those abs while you are dancing. It makes you feel like you are getting a whole body workout!

I know dancing maybe a little unorthodox for exercise to some but I say if it keeps you healthy, go for it!

Are there any dances you like to do for exercise? Share them with us!

I can’t keep up with the Joneses!

While lying in bed last evening, I took a good look around my master bedroom. It is filled with a variety of beautiful items. Clothing, shoes, electronics, furniture, books, movies, etc- just a whole bunch of THINGS!! My room is not cluttered due to its size but I came to the realization that there is a whole lot of stuff in here. And then I had an epiphany! My life is seriously being dominated by material things. When I am bored, I spend hours looking online at clothing, shoes, decorations, etc. I work hard just to have spending money to be able buy more stuff.  If don’t get this under control now, I believe it could seriously turn into an addiction. And I am certain that I wouldn’t be alone.

Spending Money

Have you ever considered how much money we spend on things? People buy bigger houses because they have a lot of THINGS. People get bigger cars so they can carry more THINGS. People purchase big insurance policies to cover their THINGS. People go into debt to be able to afford THINGS. People work multiple jobs to pay for THINGS. It’s like a never ending cycle. These THINGS have started to take control our lives. It’s like modern day slavery.

To be quite transparent, I had to pray and ask God to help me get a handle on my purchasing habits (and will continue to pray about the issue). I don’t want material things to have that type of power over my life. Although I don’t buy very expensive items, I still purchase unnecessary items because I don’t like to pass up a good deal. I have so many items that I need to sell that still have price tags on them. It’s quite sad now that I think about it.

So in an effort to change my habits, I have decided that I am going to TRY EXTREMELY HARD not to buy anything EXCEPT necessities (toiletries, food, etc) for the next month or more. I am also going to try to sell as many items as I can here on my blog, eBay, etc. I need to get back to the basics. I have less than a year before my lease is up and I would like downsize before our next move. I would like you guys to encourage me to stay on track. The last items I purchased were a pair of sneakers and a new camera with a wireless adapter due to arrive next week (super excited…eek!). I am going to buy my dad a Father’s day gift and then I will NOT be purchasing anything else for a while. Hopefully one day I can adopt a life of minimalism. I mean really ..how many shoes can one possibly need for a mere 2 feet?!

Y’all pray my strength in the Lord! :)

Last Minute Getaway!

Have you ever gotten a last minute invitation to getaway for a few days? Of course you accept! You are a certified travel junkie! You love a good adventure so undoubtedly you get super stoked about the trip. You are smiling from ear to ear. But wait….suddenly that happy feeling is now being overshadowed by overwhelming thoughts of “what am I going to wear?! What am I going to pack?! Do I have time to find a new outfit? I have nothing to wear!!

Well, pump your brakes ladies! Breathe :) I have a treat just for you! It’s a foolproof guide for a last minute summertime getaway. With this plan you will be packed and out the door in less than 20 minutes! Heck you may even have time to do that last minute manicure and pedicure before you head out.

You just need the summer time basics:

Summer Weekend Getaway Ready!
  • A maxi dress or 2
  • A pair of denim shorts and a tee
  • A bathing suit of course :)
  • A pair of hoop earrings
  • One pair of flats and a pair of wedges to dress up a casual look
  • A pair of denim. I prefer white in the summer but you can also choose a dark wash.
  • A cute top to pair with your denim
  • A versatile accessory like a scarf. It can be used as a cover up for that bikini or easily converted into a dress, skirt or top if necessary.
  • A hat and some sunglasses (the sun is rather hot in the summer!)
  • A beach towel
  • Undergarments & toiletries are a given.
Simple, right? I told you so. You can choose a couple of items from this guide for that weekend on the beach or you can add a few items for that 4 day mini vacation at a lakeside resort. Either way, you will be packed and ready to go while having your friends/family/significant other thinking that you are some type of a packing ninja!
You’re welcome :)
Would you add anything to the list? Let me know in the comments down below.

Storybook Rings from Traveling!

I absolutely love traveling! One of the most enjoyable parts about traveling for me is purchasing a little souvenir at the end of the trip to commemorate the adventure. On my first trip to sunny California, I decided that I would start collecting a right hand cocktail ring from each journey! I love jewelry but I especially love rings. They can jazz up any outfit and garner a lot of attention. Also I thought it would be really cool to be able to tell a story anytime someone at a social gathering asked me “girl where did you get that ring?” And so my obsession collection began!

Here are a few of my favorite rings!

Here is the first ring from my California adventure. I feel in love with the pearlescent stone. It reminds me of the white sandy beaches on the Pacific coast. Beautiful!

Unfortunately I discovered my love for cocktail rings after vacations to several other beautiful locations. I am currently on a mission to find rings that represent those cities. Luckily there are a plethora of websites online to help me in my pursuit of the perfect ring. While searching for a ring to represent my trip to Chicago, I stumbled upon the Links of London collection. I have been swooning over one of their beautiful rings called the Hope ring ever since. It reminds me of the “Bean” in Millenium Park! Here is a photo of the ring:

Now here is a quick video of the Bean in Millennium Park in Chicago:

Don’t they look remarkably close to each other? I am hoping one day to add it to my growing collection.

So, what do you collect from your travels? I would love to hear about it!

DC Roundup

Overall DC was ahhh-ma-zing!! My favorite day was our last day in the city. We woke up early with big plans to visit all the historic national monuments. We almost accomplished that feat. At the end of the day, we were completely worn out but it was definitely worth it. We will have memories to last a lifetime. I will definitely would like to visit the city again sometime in the near future. In the meantime, we have some awesome photos to commemorate the experience. And since you guys are my buddies I figured I would share them with you. Enjoy!

Cool story about this mural in the dome of the Capitol. I won’t tell it but if you look closely at the tree you can see the face of the rebel artist who painted this section.

Had to share this photo. George Washington reminded me of a pimp in this for some reason. Maybe because he is surrounded by all these women and is holding a cane LOL.

Isn’t the architecture in this building amazing?! The mural of GW has 13 women to portray the original 13 states.

Love this statue. It was so large and enchanting.

Lessons & Blessings

Its-my-birthday

I am grateful to God that He allowed me to see another wonderful birthday yesterday.  It was the last  one as a twenty something! I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the lessons I have learned so far in my life and truly appreciate the blessings I have been given throughout the years.

Let’s start with the blessings….

Well first of all, I am extremely grateful that I get to know Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior for myself. If you don’t know Him I would love to introduce you to Him.

I am grateful that God has blessed me with a great career. He has definitely brought me a long way in a short period of time. Just 6 years ago, I was a BROKE college student who came from underprivileged background. I was so broke that I had to use extreme measures to survive. I had to boil water on the stove so I could take a bath because I couldn’t afford the gas bill so that meant no hot water heater or heat.  I worked at a gas station that sold chicken. I would work the night shift so that I would be able to take the chicken home at night because they had to get rid of it at the end of the shift. Most college students lived on ramen noodles. I lived on beans and chicken. I had a job but minimum wage didn’t really go that far. It covered my gas to get back and forth to school/work and a few utilities. I was so broke that I knew how many miles I could drive on E before my car would finally cut off. I used to pray for the day when I finally became a nurse so that my situation would change. He has blessed me with the ability to make a living helping others and in return I don’t have to live everyday trying to make a dollar stretch so far. Granted I know someday this could change. For now, I’m just grateful that I have been given this opportunity!

I am grateful to have such a supportive family! You can’t choose your family but I am blessed that mine is a true gem. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

I  have been blessed with a wonderful circle of friends. They are like my family.

I am grateful to have had such a loving grandmother in my life for 28 years. She was like my second Mom. She gave me tough love. She gave me unconditional love. She even brought me back to life once when I was 9 months old and stopped breathing. She considered me her favorite. We had a very strong bond. She will be missed but I am happy that she no longer has to suffer with her illness anymore.

I am grateful to have such a loving husband in my life. A lot of people doubted that our relationship would last because we got married at a young age. So far we have disproved the skeptics. 5 years and counting :)

I am so grateful to have so many nieces, nephews and godchildren. I get to spoil them and return them to their parents :) It’s the best thing ever!

I am grateful that God gave me such a compassion to help people. Even in this crazy world, I always find myself trying to see the good in people and wanting to help those less fortunate.

I am blessed to have a place to call home. There are so many homeless people in my community. I have spoken to some of them under a local bridge. Their stories are amazing. A lot of these people were working professionals who lost their jobs due to the economic downturn. They haven’t been able to secure other jobs due to age and experience so as a result they lost their homes. Some people have no family to turn to or they simply cannot afford to make it to family members out of state.

And finally it’s a blessing that my hubby got me on a plane for the first time in 2010. Since then, I have been a travel junkie and I love it!!

And of course there were a few lessons learned a long the way…

I learned to embrace the failures in my life as much as I embrace the successes. I think sometimes failure can be more of a motivating factor than success. If you always succeed at everything you try, then you will never learn how to cope effectively with failure. I used to think that if I failed at something that it meant that I wasn’t smart enough or I didn’t try hard enough. Now I am able to put things into perspective and determine the best route to approach the situation again. Failure teaches you patience, perseverance and enhances your determination.

I learned my self worth. It makes me sad that so many young women today degrade themselves. I can’t stand when women call each other b**ch*s or other derogatory names or even allow someone else to refer to them in that manner. I know wish that women would see themselves the way God sees them- a Proverbs 31 woman. We are worth more than rubies ladies! Stop letting people discredit you value.

I am learning to live in the moment. I have allowed too many great opportunities to pass me by because I was worried about the future or reliving a page from the past. I have realized that growth comes from my decisions. If I make a mistake, so what. If it turns out to be an amazing experience then its worth it but I will never know unless I take a leap of faith.

And of course….

I am so blessed to have met all of you through this blog. I never thought anyone would read my blog but nearly 400 of you proved me wrong. Thank you for your kind words and continued support!

Adios DC, Hello Big Apple!

Hey guys! I am super stoked right now. I am sitting in the JFK Airport awaiting our ride into NYC! I know what you’re thinking…what happened the last 2 days in DC? Well don’t worry I wouldn’t leave you guys hanging like that…or would I? Just kidding. Our last 2 days in DC were pretty awesome. Lets start with Day 2.

First, we had a private guided tour of the US Capitol. We were able to arrange this through our state senator. It was amazing. I fell in love with the beautiful architecture in the Capitol as well as all the other historical buildings. The attention to detail was just breathtaking! After the tour, the guide hooked us up with gallery passes to go sit in House of Representatives meeting room. They are good until the next Congressional session which I thought was quite nice. It was pretty neat to see the site where nothing gets accomplished LOL. Big Brother don’t come for me! Anywho we left there and headed to the historical Union Station. It houses an Amtrak station, shops, and restaurants. We had lunch at Johnny Rockets. The food was pretty good for a burger & fries joint. We left there and decided to go to the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum since it was right next door. My initial thought was this is going to be SO boring. Who wants to visit a museum about mail?! But it turned out not to be such a bad stop after all. Probably not somewhere I would visit again but interesting nonetheless. Did I mention to you all that we walked everywhere in this city?! I mean everywhere. I purchased a short trip Metro pass for my husband and myself (a cost of $70) and we used it 2 freaking times! Can you say waste of money? Anyway I guess you live and you learn. We will definitely not be purchasing one here in NYC. After we left that Smithsonian museum we headed a few blocks down to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. Now this is my idea of an awesome museum! There were interactive rides, flight simulators, planetariums, etc. It also housed a few NASA space shuttles and telescopes. We checked out all of the exhibits before checking out the Hubble at the IMAX theatre located in the museum. The film was cool…well the parts of it I was alert for. I am pretty sure I took a power nap during the show. We were pretty exhausted by this point in the day. It was around 5pm and DC was very hot…like 85 degrees! Well the power nap must have given us a second wind so we stopped for refreshments and went for a stroll around the National Mall. Afterward we decided that we would head over to the Obama residence AKA the White House. That was an experience like no other!

I felt like I was visiting another country LOL. There were policemen and Secret Service agents everywhere. There were people on top of the roof surveying the area. And of course there were people protesting in the streets in front of the gate. And then there were tourists galore. It was a little chaotic but of course it was worth the hassle since we had never seen the White House up close & personal. I took a couple of photos and headed across the street to the park while my hubby stood at the gate observing. I think he was secretly hoping he would get a glimpse of the POTUS but unfortunately that didn’t happen. After about an hour or so, we decided to head to dinner at a restaurant called Chop’t Creative Salad Company on 12th Street for dinner. It was just ok. I’ve had better salads elsewhere. While we sat there we came to the conclusion that we couldn’t bare to walk another mile that day so we hailed a cab back to the condo and got settled in for the evening. Whew! I’m pretty tired after writing this. I can’t believe we did all that in one day! But wait there’s more. But you will have to wait to hear about day 3. Our shuttle has arrived to take us to our hotel here in NYC.

Until next post,

Hello Nation’s Capital

Well guys the travel bug has struck again. We are currently in the 2nd city of our 3 city tour- Washington D.C. Let me just say its far more interesting then I remember. The last time I visited this city was during a field trip in the 8th grade. I remember thinking it was quite boring back then but I am truly loving it as an adult…so far. Today has been filled with its ups and downs but I have managed not to kill my husband so that must count for something, right? We decided to try to immerse ourselves into the city life so we decided to take the Metro from the airport instead of a cab to our rental property. Probably not the smartest idea with luggage but we rolled with it anyway.

Once we left the Metro station, we tried to use trusty ole Google Maps to guide us for the mile walk we had to the condo. For the record, Google Maps sucks big time! We walked in a circle in Downtown Washington D.C. for at least a half an hour. And because we didn’t want to seem as though we were being defeated by Siri, we decided to keep turning around and crossing streets over and over instead of stopping to ask someone for directions. We were trying so hard not to look like scatterbrained tourists but I’m sure the fact that we passed the same people at a local bistro about 3 times was a dead giveaway. At one point we ended up in front of the White House. I turned to my hubby and said I’m sure we are not staying here tonight lol. Although I’m sure with all the rooms they have in that house, they wouldn’t have even noticed. After about 45 minutes we finally arrived at our condo. Yippee! I haven’t been so happy to reach a building in a long time! *Note to self: Next time take a freaking taxi! Save the city experience for after the check in!

After getting settled in, we decided we needed to eat to replace the 900 calories we burned trying to find the place so we headed out to find food. The aroma from a local barbecue joint met my nostrils on the street corner and I was sold before we even crossed the street. We met the aroma at a spot called Hill Country Barbecue and I am glad we did. First of all, the restaurant was themed after Texas Hill Country barbecue and I currently live in the Texas Hill Country so it was like I found a little piece of home in the city. Luckily that aroma that lured me in did not disappoint. They made one of the best barbecue brisket sandwiches that I’ve had so far. If you ever visit DC, be sure to give them a try! You won’t be sorry.

After lunch, we headed over to the International Spy Museum. It was pretty interesting! We participated in an interactive spy mission that tested our abilities to think quickly and be extremely observant. Afterward, we went to the School for Spies where we were given aliases and cover stories that we had to remember while there. We visited various exhibits about real life spies. One thing I found surprising was the fact that Julia Child, Josephine Baker, Edgar Allan Poe, and Daniel Defoe were all spies! That made me wonder who some of the modern day spies could be. And of course there was an exhibit about the most infamous fictional spy of all- Bond… James Bond! The exhibits were awesome. We walked that huge museum for hours!

Our feet were aching by the time we finally left. Luckily for us, there was a beautiful art sculpture garden near the museum. We sat on a concrete bench for a mere 15 minutes before a security guard starting yelling that we all needed to leave. Apparently things shut down in D.C. at 5 pm sharp! And they mean that doggone thing! So we left and headed to the National Mall to chill in front of the Capitol Building for a while before heading back to the condo for the evening. My hubby was exhausted so I am allowing him to get all the rest he wants to while we are here in DC. We will be heading to NYC on Friday afternoon and there will be NO rest for the weary once we get there!

Well as you can probably tell from this novela I just penned, I am just a little bored. I guess I will wake him up shortly so that we can determine what we are going to do for dinner.

P.S. I am going to try to blog my exploits during my vacation rather than after the fact. That way I feel like I am taking you guys along with me! Unfortunately, I am blogging from my travel sidekick- my iPad so I won’t be able to show you my awesome photos until we return home. *Note to Apple* include an SD card slot on the next iPad! I’m sure that will be on the iPad 356 coming out later this year.

Hopefully your brain did not explode from all the words that are coming out of this post. Leave me a comment down below and let me if you plan to follow along for my vacation adventures.

Until next post,

Summer Ready Abs

Summer time is quickly approaching! We all know what that means. It’s time to shed that winter “insulation” and tone up to look chic those cute bathing suits, summer dresses, and distressed denim shorts. Luckily Tone It Up has a solution to help us burn the fat so that we will be ready for the beautiful tropical beaches in the coming months. Here is one of their awesome workout routines that works those abs, muffin tops and love handles. I can attest it burns good :)

I’ve really gotten into the exercises. Now…. if I could only get my diet under control, I would be in business! If you guys have any great healthy recipes, please feel free to share.

P.S. School is out for summer which means that I am “on vacation” for 4 whole months. I’m sure I will have to find a job or find something to do before then because I will probably go crazy from boredom. Until then I will have LOTS of time to devote to CA! I’m sure you all will keep me motivated :)

A Name Change…maybe?

I have been toying with the idea of changing my blog’s name for a few months now. I like Creativity Arise but I feel that it’s name is quite misleading at times. My blog is a compilation of lifestyle, inspiration, travel, and other miscellaneous postings with occasional creative aspects. I would love to change its name before the 1 year mark but then I have reservations about it. I have been battling with this dilemma and I finally want it to come to an end.

The naming process in my mind has been the equivalent to naming a child. Although my blog is only in its infancy and has not fully come to know its name, purpose, etc, I still feel weird about changing the name everyone else has come to know her as. (Yes I just gender assigned my blog!)  But on the other hand, a name is significant in social media. People can sometimes determine if they want to read a blog based on its name and classification in the blogosphere. I don’t know guys. I’m at a loss. I would love to hear your thoughts about the name.

Have you ever had this dilemma or have you always been in love with your blog’s name? Have you changed your blog’s name in the past? What was the outcome? Share!

The countdown to travel begins!

I woke up this morning excited about our 3 city vacation that is quickly approaching! I can’t believe in a mere 2 weeks we will be embarking on a east coast adventure. First it will be off to Charlotte, NC & SC to visit family. Next we will be jetting to Washington D.C. to take in the sights and a little dining and maybe a cruise on the Potomac depending on the weather. Lastly its off to NYC (probably the most exciting part for me) for the weekend! In all there will be 9 glorious days of tourism and I cannot wait! I know its not an elaborate transatlantic vacation or backpacking tour of Europe but it will definitely be quite fun nonetheless! I’m even happier that the Senate passed a bill to end these furloughs so we don’t have to deal with the crazy flight delays. I hear this week was horrible for travelers. Now if the House will follow suit that would be great!

On another note, I was thinking about vlogging this trip for a change. I always take like a million pics but I think I really want to take you guys with us this time. I will have to sell the hubster on the idea. He doesn’t really like filming or taking pictures in public for some reason. We are total opposites in that area. So what do you guys think? Would you rather see pictures or video of our vacation for a Travel Thursday post? Let me know in the comments below!

Also if you have any suggestions about where we should eat, shop, or sights we should see, etc in any of these cities, please feel free to share!

Do you have any upcoming travel plans that you are stoked about?

You are talented!

Image

20130422-174835.jpg

I found this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt very intriguing. We have all had our moments when we feel less popular, less talented, or dare to say it less blessed than someone else in our lives. Sometimes we even let that feeling of inferiority cloud our thinking. That can lead to you losing your mojo. You know that inner spark that makes us each unique.  I just wanted to encourage you to stop doubting your potential! God gave us all unique gifts. Just because you may not be able to do something someone else can, it doesn’t mean that you are inferior to them. It only means that you have been blessed with a different skill set. There is nothing wrong with that! I would like to challenge you to give yourself a verbal praise whenever you feel inferior. So for instance ” I might say “I may not be great at singing but I’m one heck of a dancer!” Or ” I may not be the best public speaker in front of a large crowd but I am pretty awesome at giving presentations in a small group setting!” You will be surprised at how positive thinking and speaking can lift your spirits!

Have a wonderful Monday all :)

Spring Weekends as told by my iPhone

collage weekend1

collageweekend2

The past few weekends have been a blur. It’s a good thing that I am obsessed with snapping photos with my iPhone or I may have forgotten about a lot of the good and not so good things that I have experienced in the last few weeks.

Here is a break down of the photos you see.

1 & 2. Getting my exercise in.

3. Lunch at Olive Garden

4. I finally made it to the beach in my hometown area :) I love the beach.

5. The view from my grandmother’s hospital room on the day she passed away.

6. Hanging out with my nieces.

7. Got to see one of my childhood friends who I hadn’t seen in MANY years! He surprised me and came to my grandmother’s funeral :) .

8.  Lots of flying to and from Texas.

9. My poor swollen face from a root canal. People lie. Root canals are painful especially if you are hard to get numb. I hope to never have to get another one-EVER!

10.  Dinner on the lake with some of my husband’s coworkers in honor of a coworker who passed away unexpectedly.

11. Dinner date with my love at an old school fish camp. The food was so good! The decor…not so much.

12.  My Easter swag ;)

13. Easter brunch at MiMi’s Cafe. These roasted chicken crepes were so delicious!

14.  I participated in the Relay for Life with my husband and his coworkers in honor of 5 members of my family who passed away from cancer. Only made it to 12:30 am though LOL.

15. My hubby and I went to a hot air balloon festival. Unfortunately it was too windy for the pilots to actually fly the balloons so they just used the propane flames to light up the runway instead.

16. Hubby and I had lunch outdoors at a local restaurant on the lake yesterday.

17. I have been enjoying nature for sure. Isn’t this tree beautiful?

18. Guess what?  I took some flying lessons! Can you believe it? I’m sure you guys would never believe that as much as I complain about my fear of flying here on CA LOL.  It was really cool to pose with this private plane at the balloon festival.

Whew! That’s a whole lot of fun in a few short weekends. I think today will be a lazy day to recoup from all of these experiences. I think I will prepare an old fashioned southern dinner for my hubby and I to enjoy this evening and catch Django Unchained finally since I just purchased the DVD.

What have you been up to this Spring? I would love to hear about it!

It’s a sad day in the USA!

As I was leaving work this afternoon, I glanced over at the TV in the waiting room in the emergency room. And then it happened…. CNN aired an instant replay of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. The footage stopped me in my tracks. Honestly, I think I was in shock for a few minutes.  I immediately had flashbacks of that tragic day back in 2001 when I heard the news of airplanes flying into the World Trade Centers in NYC. My heart sank and it still feels very heavy at this moment. As I drove home, I kept thinking why are people so evil? Why do cowards feel the need to make everyone else as miserable as they are? So many innocent victims….such a senseless act!

What broke my heart even more was to see the pictures of marathon runners who literally had their legs blown off while crossing the finish line! What should have been a celebratory moment immediately turned into a moment filled with panic, fear, pain, shear terror!! You can check out one of the photos here -if you have a strong stomach. It was supposed to be a joyous holiday in Boston. But now because of some random perpetrator it will be overshadowed by traumatic injuries and death. God help this nation! It’s truly a sad day in the USA.

Thank God for the first responders and good samaritans who stepped in to help those injured. They definitely helped restore my faith that there is still some good left in humanity. My prayers go out to all the victims, survivors, and families affected by this atrocity. My prayers also goes out to the citizens of Boston. Your peaceful city was turned upside down today and life as you know it most likely has changed.

Fashionable Fridays: Coachella Craze

Everyone has been talking about the Coachella music festival here lately. Although I don’t live in sunny California, I still love looking at the fashion that people wear to this infamous music festival. If I were going here are some of the  outfits that I might pair together for the event.

Coachella Craze
Of course the buck doesn’t stop here. There are so many ways to look chic and be comfortable enough to dance for hours to some of the amazing bands featured at Coachella.
Are you headed to Coachella this year? If yes, I would love to see your Coachella fashion! Tag me in a pic on Instagram @misscre8tivity or tweet me @misscre8tivity to share. If I love your look , I will feature you on my blog this weekend!
Not in the states or sunny California, no problem! Take a photo of an outfit you would wear to a music festival in your area and tweet it to me or instagram me! You never know, you could be featured here on Creativity Arise!
