DC Roundup

Overall DC was ahhh-ma-zing!! My favorite day was our last day in the city. We woke up early with big plans to visit all the historic national monuments. We almost accomplished that feat. At the end of the day, we were completely worn out but it was definitely worth it. We will have memories to last a lifetime. I will definitely would like to visit the city again sometime in the near future. In the meantime, we have some awesome photos to commemorate the experience. And since you guys are my buddies I figured I would share them with you. Enjoy!

Cool story about this mural in the dome of the Capitol. I won’t tell it but if you look closely at the tree you can see the face of the rebel artist who painted this section.

Had to share this photo. George Washington reminded me of a pimp in this for some reason. Maybe because he is surrounded by all these women and is holding a cane LOL.

Isn’t the architecture in this building amazing?! The mural of GW has 13 women to portray the original 13 states.

Love this statue. It was so large and enchanting.

Day 3: We went back to the Capitol building so that hubby could capture all the photos he wanted on our last day. I was feeling pretty horrible this day honestly because my allergies were in overdrive. That wasn’t going to stop me though! We were determined to see all the sights on our list.

Summer Ready Abs

Summer time is quickly approaching! We all know what that means. It’s time to shed that winter “insulation” and tone up to look chic those cute bathing suits, summer dresses, and distressed denim shorts. Luckily Tone It Up has a solution to help us burn the fat so that we will be ready for the beautiful tropical beaches in the coming months. Here is one of their awesome workout routines that works those abs, muffin tops and love handles. I can attest it burns good :)

I’ve really gotten into the exercises. Now…. if I could only get my diet under control, I would be in business! If you guys have any great healthy recipes, please feel free to share.

P.S. School is out for summer which means that I am “on vacation” for 4 whole months. I’m sure I will have to find a job or find something to do before then because I will probably go crazy from boredom. Until then I will have LOTS of time to devote to CA! I’m sure you all will keep me motivated :)

A Name Change…maybe?

I have been toying with the idea of changing my blog’s name for a few months now. I like Creativity Arise but I feel that it’s name is quite misleading at times. My blog is a compilation of lifestyle, inspiration, travel, and other miscellaneous postings with occasional creative aspects. I would love to change its name before the 1 year mark but then I have reservations about it. I have been battling with this dilemma and I finally want it to come to an end.

The naming process in my mind has been the equivalent to naming a child. Although my blog is only in its infancy and has not fully come to know its name, purpose, etc, I still feel weird about changing the name everyone else has come to know her as. (Yes I just gender assigned my blog!)  But on the other hand, a name is significant in social media. People can sometimes determine if they want to read a blog based on its name and classification in the blogosphere. I don’t know guys. I’m at a loss. I would love to hear your thoughts about the name.

Have you ever had this dilemma or have you always been in love with your blog’s name? Have you changed your blog’s name in the past? What was the outcome? Share!

Wellness Wednesday

My desire to maintain my health has been a long time coming. I realized in nursing school while doing a genogram of illnesses that run in my family that I was doomed to have some type of chronic illness that would takeover my life starting around middle adulthood. I am determined not to let that happen! I was slack for a while but it seems that the closer I get to 30, the more motivated I become to be healthy. I set a goal this year that I would finally reach my goal weight of 136 lbs and maintain it by eating a healthy diet and working out. I am happy to report that I met that goal last week *happy dance*. That has definitely been one of the highlights of my year thus far. So now comes the difficult part- keeping the weight off. It is a work in progress but I am committed to my health.

One of the main things I have been doing to maintain my weight is drinking a lot of bottled water- that was until today when my world was turned upside down. I watched a very informative documentary about bottled water entitled “Tapped” that made me vow to never purchase another bottle of water (as long as I have the choice)! If you have not seen that documentary, I would highly recommend it. You wouldn’t think that the one thing you have heard is so great for your health could be the one thing that could potentially be toxic to your health because of all of the toxins and contaminants that could be floating in your water. But sadly after watching this movie I realized I may have done more harm than good by drinking bottled water. Did you know that the FDA requires the bottled water manufacturers to do their own testing and reporting- not the FDA?! I thought their sole purpose was supposed to be to protect the consumer but apparently I was mistaken. I may sound like a conspiracy theorist but I have a feeling that this is the reason why the cancer rate in the US has seemed to quadruple in recent years. I remember when I was a teenager I hardly heard of anyone having cancer. Now it seems like at least 1 out of 5 people has or knows someone with cancer. Disclaimer:This is just a speculation, so please do not get all in a tizzy! If you drink bottled water as frequently as I did, be sure to check out this documentary on Netflix, Amazon, etc. I was so ticked off after watching this movie that I immediately poured out the bottled water that I was sipping on.

Of course I’m not going to stop drinking water altogether but I am definitely going to buy a GLASS bottle for travel and a filtered pitcher for my water and work it out. I may even try out one of those filtered water bottles. If anyone knows a good water bottle, please leave a comment down below. If you watch this video, I would love to hear your thoughts! Also if you have any tips on how to maintain weight PLEASE share!

How exciting :)

When I started this blog in June 2012, I never expected for people to read it, find it interesting, or even come back repeatedly. I thought it would just be creative outlet that my hubby, family , and friends would be forced to read  enjoy. But it amazed me that my infant blog has touched the lives of readers in over 66 countries!! How amazing is that? My stats may not be comparable to other blogs in existence for the same length of time but I am still overjoyed! If I only had one reader, I would still blog away. I welcome you to check out my annual report constructed by WordPress. To all you seasoned bloggers out there, I would love to hear some tips on how to make my blog even better in 2013!  I love constructive criticism!

Until next post, Brittany

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 3,200 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 5 years to get that many views.

A Year in Review 2012

2012

As with any year, 2012 came with its share of ups and downs. I would much rather reminisce on the good times than the bad. Of course I wanted to share the highlights with all of my friends here on the blogosphere. Here is a list of my top 10  moments from this year. Let’s do this countdown style!

10. I celebrated my 2nd/3rd semester as a nursing professor. I never imagined that I would ever become a nursing professor but it turned out to be one of the best career moves that I have made- thus far. I love teaching and love working with my students. They have all been amazing!

9. Starting this blog has been so awesome. I got to meet so many other bloggers from all over the world. I also enjoy having a creative outlet and finally being able to relate to people who share my passions.

8. I got to go to Atlanta for Woman Thou Art Loosed, spend time with my stepsister who I had not seen in a long time ,and also spend time amongst thousands of other women praising God. It was amaze balls! Can’t wait to do it again in Dallas Aug 2013.

7. I got to travel A LOT! I absolutely love traveling. Flying…. not so much! My hubby and I got to visit a lot of places we haven’t been such as Las Vegas & California. Can’t wait to see what next year brings.

IMG_0995

6. I got to go on a mother daughter trip with my mom and sister in law to Jacksonville FL. It was the first time we had been on vacation together. We had a blast!

IMG_2283

5. Celebrated 5 wonderful years of marriage with my awesome husband! Such a beautiful milestone. Time seems to fly when you’re in love <3 <3 <3

4. A couple of weeks ago, my husband graduated with a Master of Engineering degree and my sister in law C graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree. I am so proud of them :)

DSC_0417 DSC_0578

3. Visited California for the first time definitely had to rank at the top of my list! I had such a good time! I would love to stay there permanently if the cost of living wasn’t so expensive. Sailing to Catalina Island for Earth Day was so amazing. Here is a pic of me at the top of the hills on Catalina Island.

IMG_1407

2. Reuniting in one state with my husband was one of the best moments of the year! He has had to move around the country frequently with his job for months at a time. At the beginning of the year he was stationed in California while I was living in Texas. It was the longest time we had been living in different areas. A whole 7 months! So I was overjoyed when we finally were able to move into one house again.

1. The best moment of 2012 for me hands down would be watching my mom ring the bell at the local cancer center to signify for her last treatment and getting the call that she was cancer free!!! I still remember what I was doing (getting dental work done) when we found out. I was shouting hooray even though my mouth was hurting LOL! My mom is now healthy and back to her old self and I am so grateful to God for healing her body! Our prayers were answered. I am definitely a believer that God can heal, no matter what the prognosis looks like.

What were the highlights of your year? As you can see I had quite a few. I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for us!

Signing out for 2012!

How to Survive a Long Winter Vacation!

I have always been what I like to characterize as a busy body for as long as I can remember. I cannot stand being bored! I have 5 glorious weeks off from work starting December 5 and so I decided to create a plan to keep from going stir crazy in this time off. Luckily for me, 17 of those days I will get to spend with family and friends back home in SC for the holidays! But the other days will be spent alone as everyone else will be working. So here are the top seven activities I plan to implement  during my vacation.
Survival Kit
  1. Reading my Bible! I have been very consumed in my personal life lately so I have decided that I am going to make sure I dedicate myself to exploring more of God’s Word. I have even created a challenge on Facebook to keep myself motivated. If you are interested in knowing more about this challenge, please feel free to check out the group on FB.
  2. Learning something new! I would love to learn how to play the djembe. The djembe is an African hand drum. I have always loved the way they sound and so I want to learn how to play. You can take a listen at the drum in action here. A museum in my area actually offers classes to learn to play this instrument so I figured that would definitely keep me intrigued and give me the opportunity to meet new people.
  3. Making some jewelry. For those who don’t know I make jewelry sometimes in my spare time. I haven’t made as much as I usually do this year. So I plan to make some before I head home for the holidays. My family usually asks to see my pieces when I return home. I may show you guys some of my previous pieces so you can see my creativity.
  4. Experiment with different makeup looks and nail polishes. I don’t get to wear nail polish to work so I will definitely be keeping my nails manicured during this period. I also only know how to do basic makeup looks so I want to try some new looks inspired by YouTube. I most likely will not be sharing because I am not that confident in my abilities LOL!
  5. Catch up on my shows on TiVo on the lazy couch potato days.
  6. Taking lots of photos of friends, family, different places etc. Just  getting some lots of use out of my husband’s fancy Nikon camera :)
  7. Of course I would be remised if I didn’t include lots of BLOGGING and writing into my list! I have lots of ideas and I will most like have LOTS of time to get them on paper/ in print!

If you have a vacation coming up, what do you plan to do to keep from being bored? I would love to hear about it!

Until next post,

Britt <3

Guide to the $10 Gift Exchange

Hello my lovely readers! As we all know Christmas is quickly approaching. It’s that time of year where we all stress out and try to figure out what to buy our significant others, family, friends, coworkers, etc. Well do not fret! Not to toot my own horn but I consider myself to be a very savvy shopper! So I have decided that I will create a mini series to help you choose some nice gifts for that special someone in your life this Christmas season.

The $10 gift exchange seems to be a common trend during the Christmas season.  I have gone to many Christmas parties where the host would ask everyone to bring a $10 gift to the party in order to play fun gift exchange games like Dirty Santa, Chinese gift exchange or white elephant.  I have also participated in many $10 gift exchanges at work, church, etc. Sometimes the gifts I received were great and other times….well we all know how bad those gifts can sometimes be O_o. So here are a few gift ideas to help you choose a great gift this year without breaking the bank.

A manly gift list for the perfect $10 gift:

  1. a skinny necktie like this red tie very festive for the holiday season or a quirky tie based on the man’s interests like this for the piano lover or this for the edgy male. If you don’t know their particular style a solid tie is always a safe option
  2. iTunes gift card for mp3 downloads or Amazon credits to download an album
  3. restaurant voucher to their favorite establishment
  4. a book or Kindle/ Nook voucher for a book
  5. iPhone case (Amazon has a slew of these under $10 so you could probably buy several for $10) Here are a few options: cassette tape inspired for the music lover , football inspired for the sports lover, gameboy inspired for the video game junkie or for someone you don’t know that well I like these chrome plated cases
  6. tool sets for the handy man like this screwdriver set from Sears
  7. sports themed hats
  8.  a bottle of alcohol is always a winner  according to my husband’s coworkers LOL
  9. wallet
  10. For the gadget lover, the possibilities are endless. Here are just a few ideas I found very interesting! A 5 in 1 pen found here, a spinning top found here  , iPad protective case found here and if you are willing to spend a few extra bucks my favorite item is this coffee warmer found here!

A $10 gift list fit for a queen:

  • If you are willing to pay a few cents more you could score a designer iPhone case like this.
  • personalized stationery: Vistaprint has several options to allow you to customize stationery, notebooks, photo journals, etc for under $10
  • a perfume gift set like this set from Justin Bieber (currently at Walmart for $10)

  • a pair of earrings or some other costume jewelry
  • restaurant voucher to favorite establishment
  • book or Kindle/ Nook voucher for a book
  • iTunes gift card for mp3 downloads of an album
  • candles from Bath & Body Works. I personally love these especially in cranberry pear bellini fragrance. P.S. I am so happy I just realized that they now make it in the wallflower fragrance!! I will be going by there by this weekend!
  • fancy travel size essentials like hand creams or mascaras or lip balms like this or this. I don’t know about you but I am a sucker for fancy packaging on simple products.
  • makeup palette from a brand like Elf or this gift set from Stila found at Sephora or this Beauty Gems palette from Ulta Beauty
  • nail polish gift set like this OPI set at Sephora
  • coffee warmer aforementioned in manly gift list
  • pashmina or scarf like the ones at Charming Charlie

I could go on and on but I think I have given you all a great start! What great gifts have you found for $10 or less? I would love to hear about them. If you found this post interesting and informative, feel free to like and share with your friends!

Until next post,

Brittany

Hi my fabulous readers! As you all know the holiday season is quickly approaching and I am so excited. I particularly love Thanksgiving because its a day dedicated to giving thanks for all of the blessings in our lives. I was sitting here thinking, why do we just limit gratitude to one day? So in order to remedy this I have decided to start a series on my blog called Gratitude. Everyday from now until Thanksgiving I will list at least one thing I am grateful for that day. Its an awesome way to remain positive daily.

So I would like you all to join in my journey of giving thanks daily. And in the process I would like to thank you all for being such loyal readers of my blog! When I started this blog I never really thought that I would have 1 follower, much less a host of followers from Facebook, Twitter, and even here in the WordPress community. So in order to thank you I have decided to host a fabulous giveaway here on my blog just for my readers.

So lets get down to logistics!

So I bet you are wondering…what exactly can I win in this giveaway?! DRUMROLL  please….. 1 lucky winner will win a year long subscription to 2 of my favorite magazines Elle Decor and Vogue :) Pretty awesome, right ? I thought so too!

So now that you know the prize, I bet you are wondering well how can I enter to win? No problem I have got you covered!

1. You must be a follower of my blog. That’s just a given. I am doing this giveaway for my awesome readers.

2. You must comment on at least ten (10) of my daily gratitude posts about what you are grateful for that day. I want you all to start focus on all the positive things you have to be thankful for in your lives.

3. Lastly I want you to like Creativity Arise’s FB page. Just click on this little link and it will take you right on over there so you can join in on the fun :) I would like you to leave a comment about what type of posts most interest you on my blog. This will be a great way to determine what you like. I want to give the people what they want!!

And that my friends is all you have to do to enter. I think that’s fairly simple. This giveaway will be open until 12 noon central standard time (CST) US on Thanksgiving day (Nov. 22, 2012). I will post the winner on Black Friday Nov 23, 2012!
